I Can't, Senpai (困ります、先輩。 Komarimasu, Senpai.) is the first episode of Ano Natsu de Matteru. It aired on January 10, 2012.

People say that when someone dies, they can go to heaven. But I don't think that's the case. When someone dies, I'm sure that person journeys into people's hearts. They live on as a memory, just like my mother and father currently live on in our hearts. But that, too, will eventually wane. That's why people desire to leave something behind in this world. So others don't forget them. So they're not forgotten...

Kaito Kirishima's opening monologue

Hand reaching out to grab Kaito in Episode 1
While testing out high ISO film on a bridge one night, first-year high school student Kaito Kirishima sees a bright blue light and is blown off the bridge by the impact of an unidentified object. A glowing hand reaches out and—as he is falling, bloodied—grabs him, and despite the events of the night, he wakes up the next morning in his futon, seemingly unharmed. Shortly after his awakening, his sister, Nanami, calls for him from downstairs and tells him he's going to be late.

As they eat together, Nanami reveals she will be going on a business trip to Bolivia for three months, as "they don't have enough people there, supposedly." She then asks Kaito if it would be okay if his sister left him; he responds by asking her if she wants to go, then by saying to go and have fun. He also reassures her that he can make his own food and that it will be summer break soon anyway, to which she replies by telling him not to go to crazy. After they place a bowl on and pray in front of a shrine dedicated to their deceased parents, they leave the house, and, outside, Nanami tells her brother she would be going shopping on the way home and would be back by seven. He tells her to have fun, then she heads off.

Ichika staring out a train window in Episode 1
Kaito, while he walks to school, hears a train and proceeds to go record it with his camera; through the lens, he sees a red-haired girl looking out of one of the train's windows. Meanwhile, the girl asks herself why she is standing out so much and if she had gotten something wrong.
